VERBO TO BE
El verbo to be tiene tres formas
distintas en el presente:
Su significado es ser/estar.
Afirmativa
I am I´m
You are You´re
He is He´s
She is She´s
It is It´s
We are We´re
You are You´re
They are They´re
(Nota: la columna de la derecha
muestra la forma contracta del verbo to be, normalmente lo utilizamos cuando
hablamos o cuando se trata de un texto no muy formal)
Examples: I´m tired
She´s

Negative
Se forma poniendo not a la
forma que teníamos en afirmativa:
I am not I´m not I´m not
You are not You´re not You aren´t
He is not He´s not He isn´t
She is not She´s not She isn´t
It is not It´s not It isn´t
We are not We´re not We aren´t
You are not You´re not You aren´t
They are not They´re not They aren´t
(Nota: las formas más utilizadas
son las dos últimas pero aun más la de más a la derecha; su utilización varía,
si nos encontramos ante un texto formal, en cuyo caso la del medio será la más
usada; la primera forma apenas nos la encontraremos)
Examples: He isn´t English (He is not English)
I´m not interested.
We aren´t ready.
Interrogative
En este caso se producirá una
inversión entre sujeto-verbo.
Am I?
Are you?
Is he?
Is she?
Is it?
Are we?
Are you?
Are they?
Examples: Am I late?
Are you
all right?
Las contestaciones a estas
preguntas se forman simplemente posponiendo a yes la forma afirmativa
del verbo to be, si la respuesta es afirmativa, o posponiendo a no la
forma negativa del verbo to be.
Examples: Are you ready?

Yes, I am (utilizaremos la forma no contraída).

No, I´m not.

Se utiliza el verbo to be cuando
hablamos de:
Edad: How old are you? -I´m 9.
Temperatura: It´s hot today.
Are you cold?
Altura: How tall is he? –He is 1 metre 80.
Peso: How heavy are you? –I´m 73 kilos.
Tamaño: My flat´s quite big. It´s 120 squares metres.
Distancia: It´s 100 kilometres to London.
Precio: How much is it? –It´s 2.23 pounds.
Hora: What´s the time? –It´s 2:30.
Fecha: It´s 21st May today.
Hambre/sed: Are you hungry? – No, I am not, but I am
thirsty.
